I recall reading that contemporaries often felt two handed swords and halberds were good for protecting the flags if things got nasty for the pike block. That was how I got started in the wargaming hobby. So back home in the States, I visited a local hobby store called "The Hobby Chest" in Skokie, Illinois in order to purchase some paints. So he steered me towards a range of 54mm toy soldiers called Steadfast, and I bought another square of soldiers. So I entered the store and bought the whole square! I hadn't looked at toy soldiers (54mm) in ages, but the window display had a square of Seaforth Highlanders fending off an attack of Dervish. There aren't any real references to the use of tricolour flags by the Irish Volunteer Force, although in 1916 the Volunteers who hadn't volunteered for military service in WW1, were known to wear tricoloured arm bands. I had a late surge in painting production towards the latter part of this week as I wanted to finish of the 14 partially painted Suren figures and build the Foot Guards up to a viable number of figures for use in our Minden game. The officer on foot is the same figure, sans flag.

The flag poles are thus made from brass wire, with the tip pounded flat with a common carpenter's hammer. These fellows are the descendents of Frederick the Great's famous Bayreuth Dragoons from the WAS and the Seven Years War. In the picture above, we see Frederick (Foundry) reviewing the standard of the Garde (Suren figures holding GMB Designs flags). I pulled the two standard bearers from each of my battalions and set them up in a parade, in order of the regimental number. Through the first six days I have been able to complete two twelve figure squadrons of DR5 Koningen Dragoons (the Queen's Dragoons). I have 48 figures in total, and 24 of them have been painted so far, with a third squadron of 12 figures getting black primered this evening. Included in that total were 8 Suren Black Watch that were partially painted and finished off on thursday night. I used the Suren Prussian officer figure as my standard bearer because his right hand is open, making it perfect for holding a flag pole. They come in four poses: officer, standard bearer, trumpeter and trooper and one horse pose is available.

Not known is if each battalion had a colonels flag and one regimental flag but probably the first battalion had one colonels and one regimental garden flag arbor; the second battalion two regimental. In 1776 during the war for independence the Massachusetts Colonial Navy (aka the Massachusetts naval militia) adopted as it's ensign a white flag charged with the green pine tree of New England, with the motto "An Appeal to Heaven" In 1971 the motto was dropped and the flag declared both the naval and maritime flag of the state (Massachusetts in one of only two states with it's own maritime ensign). That original Pledge of Allegiance was written by Francis Bellamy on September 8, 1892. Bellamy was a circulation manager in Rome, Ny and produced these words on thousands of pamphlets that have been sent to public schools in the united states. My "excuse" for this is that if you look at some of the images of Kern and Galloglass in my last post they have coloured helmets.

I have decided to paint both battalions of a Prussian regiment (60 figures per regiment) and also paint a separate mounted colonel for the regiment. I am using mostly Elite Miniatures' 1806 range of 28mm figures for my infantry, cavalry and artillery units. While using this function, the capture service will be run in the browser services. While Americans relish their own history, the country is a melting pot of different cultures with many people moving to the US from other parts of the world.
