A bride-to-be has recounted a horrifying ordeal which unfolded when her drink was spiked in a Bali nightclub.

Kristie Phelps, 27, was on a night out on the Indonesian island just four days before her October 2015 wedding to now-husband Andrew, 29, when she began slurring her words, vomiting and then collapsed.

Her next memory was waking up in a villa with her parents stroking her head, she told Daily Mail Australia. 

Luckily, Mr Phelps and her friends were there to aid her.

They took Mrs Phelps straight back to the villa that they - and her parents - were staying at. 

'All I remember is sitting having a good time then the next thing laying in the villa with my parents stroking my head,' she said of the 'surreal' experience.

The story of her harrowing ordeal comes as the Australian government warns of an increase in drink spiking in Bali.

Mr Phelps told Daily Mail Australia it was distressing watching his future wife go from having a good time to vomiting and being unconscious after drinking a spiked shot.

'We were at a nightclub in Kuta and were with a few friends and had ordered a couple of bottles, we were pouring our own drinks but then decided to order shots,' he told Daily Mail Australia.

'Not long after Kristie drank the shot she started to slur and then vomited and collapsed, it was very scary. 

'As soon as Kristie collapsed people started harassing us so I just picked her up and got her out of there.' 

He believed the shots were possibly laced by bar staff or that someone may have been watching the group and noticed that they had 'a bit' of money on them. 

Fortunately for the couple, Mrs Phelps recovered quickly and they were married four days later.

Even though the frightening experience may put many off ever travelling to the holiday destination, Andrew says he would have no hesitation in returning.

'What happened, even though it was scary is rare,' Andrew said.

'I have been to Bali five or six times now and would return tomorrow.'

The Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade warns travelers to 'pay close attention to their personal security at all times and monitor the media about possible new safety or security risks.'

'Visitors to Indonesia, particularly to tourist locations such as Bali and Lombok, should be aware of the specific risks from crime, and from drink-spiking and consumption of alcohol adulterated with harmful substances such as methanol.'

The warnings may have come too late for some.

In July, Mara Wolford a woman who lives in Bali documented on Facebook her ordeal with drink spiking.

Ms Wolford said she was drugged with 'multiple doses' of rohypnol while drinking at Echo Beach Sports Bar, in north Kuta - a popular nightspot for tourists.

Upon leaving the bar Ms Wolford said she fell to the ground, splitting her face open before projectile vomiting and nearly going into organ failure. 

And in May, a Melbourne man died after his drink was spiked while travelling in Laos.
