Father Philippe Lacroix, a Dominican priest and philosopher, wrote Trent Et Quarante. He was born in Paris and joined the friars at Avignon in 1603. While not an Roman Catholic, Father Lacroix was active in the Roman catholic church during the Counter-Reformation. After many years of being a priest, he began writing and publishing books on important topics related to religious and laity. Trent is not just famous for his works on faith, but also for his naturalism and natural philosophy work.

Trent Et Quarante offers excellent knowledge of merit and its connection to the divine and natural. According to Trent Et Quarante, merit is the conformity of an act with an eternal or supernatural standard, for instance, God. In order for merit to be on which to base it, there has to be some kind of conformity to an objective standard that is beyond self. This includes conformity to God's plan. Therefore, according to Trent Et Quarante the notion of merit is nothing more than the idea that God desires things to be accomplished. It follows that when God wants us to be virtuous then we are (though by virtue of God's plan) to be morally upright.

In order to demonstrate the concept of merit Trent divides the text in three sections. The Pre-venient Ground is the first section. It traces the history and significance of salvation. The Pre-venient Ground teaches us that salvation was possible because of the free act God made. Redemptive implies that the action is not against man's will. Man could have stopped God from giving him instructions, or he could have undone them. Man could have also avoided the fall by working out his own salvation.

The Philosophy of Virtue is the second part of this significant work. It exposes man's corruption. The Philosophy of Virtue maintains that man is not truly liberated, as man is influenced by numerous factors that result in what he does, thereby affecting his character. Man is accused of murder, rape theft, murder, and many other crimes but one; and he is guilty of freedom loss by sin because man is influenced by the forces of his own choices. According to philosophers of virtue, people are honored according their free will.

The third and final section of the chapter, the consequences for original sin, contains the consequences of failing to follow God's will in good and acceptable ways. God is great, and he has unchanging principles. So, He doesn't have to be concerned about the deeds of other people. Two consequences for people can be summarized: happiness and loss of freedom. For philosophers of virtue, freedom loss is inevitable because it goes in opposition to the will of God as he has placed men under his omnipotence , and they must obey his commands, and therefore must obey his rules.

Father Bedo translated the Philosophy of Virtue into Latin in 1570. It contained many glossaries, and was printed in forty-eight copies, along with one supplement and one original edition. It was the principal source for later works on the virtue metaphysics. A few modifications were added to accommodate the preferences of the Italians and at the times. It's a well-known title and contains a lot of complex metaphysics. It's not the first metaphysical dictionary.

Father Pole translated the thirty-second section of the current work of the metaphysical Dictionary. It is a brief description of this philosophy of merits and demerit. Both books offer a commentary on the works of Father Pole and Father Bedo. They are thus the most complete philosophical manuals regarding this topic. However, they are difficult to understand due to the peculiarities of English. The entire work is rich in aphorisms, and beautiful in the illustrations.

It is available directly from the publisher without having to use a translation agency. A glossary of words has also been included, which makes it easier for the student to comprehend the meaning of the aphorisms and arguments within the text. The manual also includes an introduction to copyright. You can purchase this book directly from the publisher or at any other bookstore that is specialized in manuals about ancient philosophies.
