Inter Miami head coach Phil Neville has been let go, the club announced on Thursday afternoon. 

'When we appointed Phil we knew he would give Inter Miami his all and I have watched him work incredibly hard and with real commitment towards the ambitions we set out for the club,' co-owner David Beckham said in a statement. 

'He and his family embraced Miami and he has devoted himself to the drive to bring success to the city and to our fans.

Phil has made a real contribution to the culture of our club with his qualities as a leader and knowledge as a coach. 

'Sometimes in this game we have to make the toughest decisions and sadly we feel the time is right to make a change.

I want to personally thank Phil for his hard work, his passion for our Club and for his integrity as a person.'

Neville also made a statement, saying, 'I would like to thank the Inter Miami CF ownership group for their trust and making me a part of this project; the players and staff for their impressive commitment, dedication and hard work; and the fans for their unwavering support for the Club since day one. 

'I'm grateful to have played a part in the growth of this Club and wish Inter Miami CF all the best in the future.' 

Early reports suggest that Tata Martino .

Martino, a former manager at Atlanta United and Barcelona, is an ex-coach of Lionel Messi - who has been linked with the club. 

Whether or not those links between the two Argentines leads to a move to MLS remains to be seen as Messi seems set to depart Paris Saint-Germain this summer.

'I like Tata Martino,' Messi said of the man who he worked with at Barcelona and the Argentina national team.
'He is a great coach and he showed that in the Clausura with what he did for the team, the way it ended and how he did it. He gets his teams playing well and we all respect him.' 

Martino, who was sacked after a poor showing with Mexico in the 2022 World Cup, has made it clear that he enjoys MLS and would be interested in a return. 

'MLS is my weakness,' Martino said.

'I was part of an extraordinary project with Atlanta United that had a clear direction, a lot of communication and similar objectives that were established very quickly and executed. 

'After coaching in MLS, I became attracted to it.
I like the league. The possibility of returning to MLS is always there.'

Miami has been in poor form under the former Manchester United star, with a 5-0-10 record across 15 games - good for worst in the Eastern Conference and third-worst in the league overall. 

One bright side is that they have progressed to the quarterfinals of the U.S.

Open Cup. That game will be managed by Javier Morales, who was announced as interim head coach.

But last night's 1-0 loss to the now eleventh place New York Red Bulls was seemingly the final straw - as supporters held signs and chanted for Neville to be sacked

Neville was hired in 2021 by his former Red Devils teammate Beckham to helm the club - but he did not find much success. Last season was their first ever trip to MLS Cup Playoffs in club history where they lost 3-0 to New York City FC.

Across 90 matches for the club, Neville's record stands at 35-13-42 - a win percentage of just 38.89 percent.

Neville has been prickly in his time with the club - having been short tempered with the Miami press on multiple occasions.

But last night may have been a step too far as Neville criticized supporters after they voiced displeasure at his son Harvey being substituted on.

Miami missed a penalty in the first few minutes of the game, with Leonardo Campana sending a tame effort straight at goalkeeper Carlos Coronel.

Red Bulls striker Tom Barlow scored the only goal of the night in the 52nd minute.

And when Neville threw on his son Harvey for the last 10 minutes in pursuit of an equalizer there were boos from the sparse Miami fanbase in attendance.

'It hurt,' Neville said.

'It hurt. But I understand, and I think he understands. Do I agree with it? Probably not.'

Neville then made a direct plea for fans to direct their unrest purely at him.

'Hit me guys, I can handle that,' he said.

'I can take that. I've had it all my career. We have the best fans. I understand their frustration, the banners and all that because it comes with the territory being a professional football manager.

'If you're unhappy, hit the manager.
Don't go for one of my young kids. That hurts and that's personal.'

As for the game itself, Neville came out fighting about the standard of his team and rued another game where Miami had plenty of possession but, once again, offered very little in terms of cutting edge in the final third.

'Our results haven't been good enough,' Neville admitted.

'We have to take the criticism that comes our way.

'I honestly don't think there's a team who came (to Miami's stadium) and was better that us,' he added. 'I honestly think that.'

The decision to sack Neville must have been a tough one for Beckham, whose family is very close with Phil and his brother Gary's families.

The pair were teammates for decades as they were part of some of Manchester United's greatest all-time teams.

But the fandom's voices were heard loudly and clearly by Beckham and the board and now they look to move forward and find something out of the rest of this season. 

Neville is the third coach to be sacked in this MLS season. Gerhard Struber of the Red Bulls and Ezra Hendrickson of the Chicago Fire were sacked on the same day in early May.
